The Statue of Liberty is an important landmark in the United States. For more than 130 years, Lady Liberty has stood proudly on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Given as a gift from France in 1886, the Statue of Liberty represents the core American belief in freedom in the United States. The history of New York City began in 1524 with an Italian explorer named Giovanni da Verrazzano, and the first European settlement can be traced back to the early 1600s, when the Dutch West India Company sent out 30 families to settle there. It was first called New Amsterdam and was located on what is presently known as Governors Island.
